Lucia Kölle et al. win the Heinz Mittelmeier Award 2025!

Last week at DKOU in Berlin, the annual Heinz Mittelmeier Prize was presented to Lucia Kölle and colleagues from @ETH Zurich for their paper “Advanced preclinical testing of a design-optimized ceramic bearing for a cervical total disc replacement.”

Kölle’s research sheds light on challenges in total disc replacement (TDR) by unveiling a new methodology that combines finite element modeling, biomechanical benchmarks, and BIOLOX®delta ceramic – selected for its low wear, superior strength, and biocompatibility.

The team’s optimized TDR bearing is designed to replicate natural spinal movement and aims to reduce reoperation rates by overcoming the biomechanical and material limitations of current TDRs. Their innovative approach was verified through rigorous experimental testing (Kölle et al. 2025) that highlights the expanding potential of TDR technology.

We are honored that our ceramic continues to play a prominent role in the development of methodologies that advance cervical TDR research and clinical practice.

Congratulations to the researchers on an outstanding achievement!
