BIOLOX®delta bearings can lower THA cost and lift quality of life
A landmark study led by Dr. Elsa Marquez, Dr. Erik Lenguerrand, and Prof. Michael Whitehouse (University of Bristol) delivers compelling evidence for the clinical and economic advantages of ceramic bearings in total hip arthroplasty (THA).
Scope
- 550,760 primary hip replacements (2009–2019, UK National Joint Registry)
- 9,590 linked revision surgeries
- 313,414 metal bearings
- 192,135 ceramic bearings, including 157,073 BIOLOX®delta
Key Findings
Compared to other modern bearings, implants using BIOLOX®delta bearings across all fixation types were associated with
- Lower 10-year revision rates
- Higher patient-reported quality-of-life scores
- Lower hospital costs in the first year post-op
Economic Insights
- Average cost of a primary THA: £10,365
- Average cost of a first revision: ~£20,378
- Average cost of a second revision: £24,290
BIOLOX®delta-bearing constructs demonstrated lower one-year costs for primary and revision surgery, respectively.
Although metal bearings still comprised 57% of implants during the study period, the data suggest a clear shift: ceramic-based constructs are emerging as both clinically superior and potentially more economically sustainable.
With over 150,000 cases analyzed, BIOLOX®delta technology consistently delivered outstanding survivorship, lower cost of care, and better patient quality of life – confirming its position as a leading material in modern THA.
