BIOLOX®delta liner with titanium taper-locking band = low complication rates, high survivorship
A new retrospective midterm study from Dr. Tozun and colleagues (Acibadem University, Istanbul) returns exciting findings for BIOLOX®delta CoC in TotalHipArthroplasty (THA). The goal of the study was to assess the seating properties of the delta-ceramic liner with titanium taper-locking bands in multi-bearing cementless cups, along with any attendant complications.
Key points to know:
- 514 hips (475 patients), 2009-2016
- Mean 9.5-year follow-up period
- BIOLOX®delta CoC liner + Smith & Nephew R3 modular cup
- 36mm: 360 hips
- 32mm: 144 hips
- 28mm: 10 hips
- 97.8% 10-year cup survival rate – any revision as endpoint
- No cases of delta ceramic liner or head fracture, wear, or loosening reported
- 3 patients reported reproducible squeaking – cup inclination (p < 0.001) associated with noisy hip
- Malseating: one case of intraoperative asymmetric seating observed
No radiological or clinical sign of ALTR or corrosion between the titanium band of the delta liner and the R3 cup.
This study demonstrates secure fixation, strong intraoperative seating, excellent midterm survivorship, and low incidence of complications for BIOLOX®delta liners with titanium taper-locking band. It’s further evidence of the versatility, flexibility, and beneficial effects of our years ahead ceramic on implant longevity.
